NIST 800-171 / RMF Training Course

NIST does not generally certify organizations, people, or products as “NIST certified.” NIST publishes standards, special publications, and frameworks that organizations may use to build and assess their programs. For defense contractors, the key objective is demonstrating implementation of applicable NIST SP 800-171 requirements, typically through documented controls, a System Security Plan (SSP), and a Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M).

NIST stands for the National Institute of Standards and Technology. It is a U.S. federal agency within the Department of Commerce that develops technical standards, guidance, and measurement science resources. NIST publications are widely used by government agencies and private organizations, particularly in cybersecurity, risk management, manufacturing, and information security compliance.

There is no single universal list called the “five standards of NIST.” NIST produces many different publications and frameworks for different purposes. In cybersecurity, commonly referenced resources include the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, NIST SP 800-53, NIST SP 800-171, NIST SP 800-37 Risk Management Framework, and NIST SP 800-30 risk assessment guidance. The applicable resource depends on your organization, data, and contract requirements.

NIST 800-171 training is most relevant for DoD contractors, subcontractors, and organizations in the defense industrial base that process, store, or transmit Controlled Unclassified Information. It is particularly valuable for CISOs, IT directors, compliance officers, program managers, system administrators, and personnel responsible for implementing controls, maintaining documentation, or supporting CMMC and DFARS-related obligations.

NIST SP 800-171 establishes requirements for protecting the confidentiality of CUI in nonfederal systems and organizations. Its requirements are organized into 14 control families, including access control, awareness and training, audit and accountability, configuration management, incident response, risk assessment, and system and information integrity. Effective implementation also requires documented policies, procedures, and evidence that controls operate as intended.

NIST SP 800-171 is a central foundation for CMMC Level 2 requirements. Organizations pursuing Level 2 need to implement and demonstrate the applicable security practices that protect CUI. Training helps teams understand control intent, assign responsibilities, identify gaps, develop supporting documentation, and prepare evidence for assessment. CMMC adds an assessment and certification structure around the required cybersecurity practices.

A System Security Plan, or SSP, describes the system boundary, environment, implemented security controls, responsible roles, and how an organization protects CUI. It gives assessors and internal stakeholders a structured view of the security program. A useful SSP is specific to the actual environment, aligns with implemented practices, and is maintained as systems, vendors, procedures, and risks change.

A practical course should help learners move from requirements to usable compliance outputs. Those outputs may include a control-gap assessment, SSP sections, POA&M entries, risk documentation, incident response runbooks, training records, and evidence-collection practices. Teams should also understand how to connect each artifact to their actual systems and operating procedures, rather than relying on generic templates alone.
