DoD CUI Awareness Training Course

DoD CUI awareness training teaches personnel how to recognize Controlled Unclassified Information and understand their responsibilities for protecting it. Effective training connects everyday activities—creating, accessing, sharing, storing, and disposing of information—to an organization’s security policies and government contract obligations. It should also explain when to escalate questions or suspected incidents rather than relying on assumptions.

CUI awareness training is relevant for employees, contractors, and other authorized personnel who may create, receive, access, process, store, transmit, or discuss CUI while supporting DoD work. This can include program managers, engineers, IT staff, quality personnel, purchasing teams, and leadership. Organizations should assign training according to roles, system access, and contract-specific responsibilities.

NIST SP 800-171 establishes security requirements for protecting CUI in nonfederal systems and organizations. Awareness training supports the human side of those safeguards by helping personnel understand approved handling practices, access responsibilities, reporting expectations, and their role in following documented procedures. Training records can also help demonstrate that the organization has communicated relevant security responsibilities to its workforce.

CMMC readiness requires organizations to implement applicable practices and demonstrate that required processes operate consistently. Personnel awareness is an important part of a mature cybersecurity program because controls can fail when users do not understand their responsibilities. A useful CUI awareness course should explain what CUI is, how to identify markings and handling requirements, and how authorized access affects daily work. It should address secure sharing, storage, transmission, incident reporting, removable media, remote work, and third-party interactions. The course should reinforce company-specific policies and show employees where to find current procedures and points of contact.

Training frequency should follow your organization’s policies, contractual obligations, risk profile, and system requirements. Many organizations provide training during onboarding and repeat it regularly, while also delivering targeted refreshers after policy changes, incidents, or role changes. Keep dated completion records, assign role-appropriate content, and verify that personnel with CUI access receive instruction before they begin handling sensitive information.

The course can support CMMC preparation by building workforce understanding of CUI protection responsibilities and connecting awareness to NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC concepts. It is not a substitute for implementing technical and operational controls, defining assessment scope, or maintaining required documentation.
