CUI Handling & Awareness Training for Contractors

For organizations handling CUI under NIST SP 800-171, awareness and training requirements include making managers, systems administrators, and users aware of security risks and applicable policies, standards, and procedures. Personnel with assigned security responsibilities need role-based training. Specific contractual obligations, system security plans, and customer flow-down requirements may add expectations, so contractors should map training to each person’s access and responsibilities.

It should also cover access control, remote-work expectations, phishing and social-engineering risks, document control, and the consequences of bypassing established procedures. Role-based modules should address specialized responsibilities.

CMMC Level 2 assessments evaluate implementation of the NIST SP 800-171 requirement for security awareness and role-based training. Contractors should be able to show that relevant personnel received appropriate instruction and that people with assigned security duties received specialized training. Assessment readiness also depends on policies, implementation evidence, and records demonstrating that training is managed as an ongoing compliance activity.

Maintain records that identify the learner, role, training topic, completion date, assessment or acknowledgment results where applicable, and any required refresher date. Retain the supporting course content, training assignments, and management approvals according to your retention practices. A centralized dashboard and controlled document system can make records easier to review, preserve revision history, and export as assessment evidence.
